Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.

Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
