The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
