In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
