The Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, Lux could seem closer to a challenging academic examination than a new popular music project from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Split across 4 separate movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring female mystique, religious ascent, and physical change, frequently by way of the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists look rather small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first album to blend historical sounds and the present, the stakes are far higher here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That playful energy comes forth brightly during a stirring Italian ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish force. The track then segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—what it will go to next."

Almost each track ends in a completely different point than where it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

A key balancing act on the album is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals upward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own inherent excess. This is a deep well of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, Lux is a lavish feast where the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
